The following undergraduate programs are offered at Salzburg College:

University Transfer Program (30–90 Credit Hours)

The University Transfer Program at Salzburg College is a condensed, flexible academic program of 30–90 U.S. credit hours, designed for students who wish to complete the first one to three years of a four-year U.S. bachelor's degree while studying in Salzburg, Austria.

This accelerated university transfer program covers the foundational coursework required by most U.S. undergraduate degree programs. Students earn U.S. university credits through Northern Illinois University (NIU) while benefiting from small class sizes, individualized academic advising, and an immersive international learning environment.

The curriculum parallels Northern Illinois University's Foundational Studies and Knowledge Domain requirements, ensuring academic continuity and transferability. Upon successful completion, students may transfer their credits to NIU or to another accredited college or university of their choice, subject to the receiving institution's transfer policies.

Enrollment & Start Dates

Enrollment in the University Transfer Program is available at the beginning of each fall and spring semester, offering students multiple entry points and flexibility in planning their academic pathway.

Bachelor of General Studies (B.G.S.) Pathway

The B.G.S. Pathway at Salzburg College is a predetermined academic track within the University Transfer Program, designed for students who plan to continue their studies toward the Bachelor of General Studies (B.G.S.) degree awarded by Northern Illinois University (NIU).

Students complete a structured sequence of coursework at Salzburg College and earn U.S. university credits through Northern Illinois University. These credits may be applied toward the Bachelor of General Studies (B.G.S.) degree should students choose to continue their studies with Northern Illinois University. The B.G.S. degree is awarded by NIU.

Academic Focus
The B.G.S. Pathway emphasizes interdisciplinary study in an international context, with a focus on:

  • Economics
  • Communication
  • Culture

The curriculum also supports the development of leadership, intercultural competence, and professional skills, while integrating contemporary global topics.

Progression to Northern Illinois University

Students who successfully complete the B.G.S. Pathway may choose to continue directly with Northern Illinois University and are guaranteed admission to the B.G.S. degree program, provided they maintain good academic standing.

To complete the Bachelor of General Studies degree, students must complete a minimum of 30 credit hours in residence (online or in person) with Northern Illinois University. The degree is completed and awarded exclusively by NIU.

Credits and Enrollment

Students may complete up to 90 U.S. credit hours at Salzburg College as part of the University Transfer Program. Enrollment in the B.G.S. Pathway is available at the beginning of each fall and spring semester.
